Spanish Torrijas

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf of white bread in slices (about 13 slices)
  • 3 tablespoons of sugar (depending on how sweet you like the “torrija”)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • grated orange rind (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon of honey
  • a dash of salt
  • 1 litre of milk
  • 4 eggs
  • half a litre of olive oil
  • ground cinnamon

Preparation

Heat the milk in a saucepan adding the cinnamon sticks, the sugar and the honey. Let it boil.

Cut the bread into slices of about 1 inch.

Pour the milk into a bowl or plate and place the bread slices, one at a time, until they are soaked.

Turn the slices gently and let them soak the other side.

Break eggs into a wide, shallow bowl or deep plate; beat lightly with a fork.

Stir in a dash of salt. Heat a frying pan with the olive oil. When hot, fry the slices one by one.

Turn and brown both sides, being careful not to burn them.

Place them on a plate covered with some paper towel so that they can drain the oil.

Finally, place them on a nice platter and sprinkle a mixture of cinnamon ground and sugar on top.

Enjoy your “torrija”!
